Programming begins at school dismissal and runs until 6:00 pm. The daily schedule includes a healthy snack, time for homework support, academic enrichment classes and opportunities for children to explore new interests, form positive relationships and socialize with peers and caring adults.
Academic Enrichment Classes
Daily enrichment classes, a central component of FKO’s programming, help students build new skills and interests and develop mastery of content introduced during the school day. Every day, children participate in classes, such as Reader’s Theatre or Engineering is Elementary that they not only find enjoyable but that also support the development of knowledge in areas central to their success as students (e.g. Literacy, Math). FKO’s enrichment class schedule follows ten-week learning semesters. Classes are sequential, long-term and project-based, allowing children time to master skills and knowledge. All classes are limited in size, with age appropriate instruction.
FKO programs offer structured Homework Centers to assist with accurate completion of assigned homework and build academic proficiency. Daily program schedules include one-on-one and small group tutoring and homework instruction, providing students with support from qualified afterschool educators to complete assignments. During homework time educators answer students’ questions on the spot, help children review for upcoming tests and quizzes, facilitate activities that allow children to practice skills newly acquired in school, and identify areas where questions remain for school day teachers. Time spent in Homework Centers is dedicated to students developing organization and independent study skills, self-discipline, and a deeper understanding of academic areas.
