Volunteer – our PALS

Be a Mentor…Change a Life!

PALS (Positive Adults Leading Students) Mentoring Program

Thanks to the Mass Mentoring Partnership,
join For Kids Only Afterschool for a great experience for you and our youth!

MISSION

The mission of PALS (Positive Adults Leading Students) Mentoring Program is to target youth who are at-risk for behavioral concerns, an unstable home life, a need for guidance, or who lack healthy social and emotional skills. By introducing these children to a mentor, they will form consistent relationships, build trust in others, and experience the many benefits of mentoring.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Mentors will be assigned to a youth enrolled in a For Kids Only Afterschool (FKO) program and will be responsible for meeting with the mentee on a weekly basis, for a minimum of one hour per week. A one year commitment is preferred. The mentor may be asked to work on certain aspects of the youth’s personal development. They will work closely with staff to understand the youth and his or her family better and to facilitate activities to help the child. The mentor will serve as an example/role model to demonstrate that adults can give, and should receive, respect. Self-realization and improved self-esteem for the young person are important goals of the relationship. It should be emphasized that the volunteer in no way replaces the parent or family’s social worker; rather, he or she provides interested, compassionate friendship.
